10Gbps speeds on a single device

When we say we offer 10Gig service, we mean it. Our fibre gateway (modem) includes one 10Gbps ethernet LAN port for wired connections, and four 1Gbps ethernet LAN ports.

To obtain 10Gbps speeds on a single device, like a desktop computer, a few things are required:

  1. A 10Gig internet plan
  2. Install a network card in your computer that supports 10Gbps ethernet. If using a device with a 2.5 or 1 Gbps port, the connection speed of the device will auto-negotiate to the fastest possible speed.
  3. Your device must be connected to the 10Gbps ethernet port.

When your service was installed, the 10Gbps port was connected to one of the ethernet outlets in your home. You can change which one is connected in the Smart Panel (typically in a closet or behind a door) where applicable. If you need help changing the active 10Gbps outlet, contact us and we can have a technician do it for you at no charge.

If you require more than one 10Gbps ethernet port, you can use a switch to expand the number of ports available.

Note that if using our WiFi mesh product, we typically connect the Mesh Access Point to the 10Gbps port for wired backhaul. If you would prefer to use 1 Gbps wired backhaul this is also fine but may affect maximum WiFi speeds. Let us know how we can help you.

  Info

10Gbps ethernet is more sensitive to wiring quality than lower speeds. Poor in building (in suite) wiring not rated at Cat6 may affect connectivity at maximum speeds; however with the short distances involved, it's typically fine.
